【妖怪説明】
栃木県宇都宮市の地名「百目鬼」の由来になったとされている妖怪。
現在も二荒山神社の裏手に百目鬼の名が残っている。

大曽（宇都宮市大曽）を通りかかった藤原秀郷のもとに白髪の老人が現われ「汝は民のため悪鬼を退治すると聞いている。明神山続きに大曽村があり、その北西にある兎田という馬捨場があるのでそこにいけ」と告げたので向かったところ、丑三つ時に悪風が吹き、身の丈３mほどの百の目をもつ鬼が現れた。刃のような髪で死馬に食らいついていたので、重藤の弓に山鳥の羽の矢をつがえ、南無八幡と唱えながら放ち鬼の胸に突き刺した。百目鬼は悲鳴をあげ逃げていき明神山で倒れたが毒気と炎を放ちつづけた。そこへ本願寺（宇都宮市塙田）の智徳上人という僧がやってきて水晶の数珠を手に「汝、我が法力をもって徳脱せよ」と唱え頭を打って成仏させた。上人は鬼のしたいを葬るように言い、その場所を百目鬼と呼ぶようになったという。

The superior told him to bury the demon's wishes and that the place was called the Doumeki.
